What to expect at a meeting
The only requirement for membership in the Snohomish Knitters Guild (SKG) is the enjoyment of fiber arts . Our members are of all experience levels and the SKG welcomes all fiber enthusiasts!
Members are encouraged to find new friends and SKG is happy to provide the means (through the website, SKG online Newsletter, Facebook and Ravelry Group) for smaller fiber groups to form in Snohomish County. If you are looking for a new group to join, check out our Local Knitting Groups calendar. If you would like to form a new group, please contact the Webmaster or post on our Ravelry or Facebook page.
Monthly Meetings
Here’s what you can expect at a regular meeting: Doors open at 6:00 p.m. A Membership Committee member will be at the entrance to answer any questions you may have, or if you wish to join, you will find information at the meeting.
Mentors are available 6:30-6:55pm. All fiber enthusiasts are encouraged to come ask questions. If you are stuck on a project and need expert help, help is available to take a look at your project. Mentors are members who are experienced in one or more of the fiber arts.
The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. When the program includes an outside speaker we request non-members pay a $10 donation upon entrance. Members of sibling guilds pay an entry fee of $5. The fee defrays the cost of the speaker and encourages non-members to join the guild.
The presentation is followed by a short break of 10 minutes and then re-commences with segments: Guild business, SKG Knit New(s) and Show and Tell of knit projects. Members and guests are invited to bring and show all fiber related items they have completed. Everyone is inspired by this exchange of sharing! Photos will be taken of shared items and links to pattern (when available) will be posted on our Show & Tell page.
Often short tutorials will also be presented during the later part of the program. These tutorials may include tips, tricks or information about various fiber arts. All tutorial information will be available after each meeting in our Member Only area.
Yarn Shops are encouraged to bring flyers and class schedules to our meetings, and if they do, you will find these written materials on the front table.
Regular Events
During the calendar year the SKG Vice-President and program committee members work hard to present a variety of topics and speakers, between annual events. The annual events are:
Destash Sale. Each year at one meeting (usually April) we have the Destash Sale – members bring yarn, books, fiber related supplies and materials to sell or trade. This is a great way to pick up new stash, or unload items you won’t use. Sale of items is restricted to members only, however the public is welcome to visit, browse & purchase.
Seattle to Portland Yarn Train - Held in April for 2013; this event has evolved and become THE annual event sponsored by the guild. Over 200 fiber enthusiasts ride the train to the Pearl District in Portland to spend the day browsing the fabulous yarn shops and other shops available in the area.
Worldwide Knit In Public Day. WWKIP day is usually held the third Saturday/Sunday in June. SKG hosts an event in coordination with local yarn shops to celebrate the joy of knitting and bring more into the fold of makers.
Stitch n' Pitch - Usually somewhere between June and August, we gather at Safeco Field on a Thursday evening to watch the Mariners play baseball and browse several dozen vendors, who bring their wares to sell.
Guild Birthday. Every September, the guild celebrates our birthday. If funding is available, SKG secures door prizes and purchases fun fiber-related goodies to raffle! Members and non-members alike are invited to renew/join the guild for the next year.
Holiday Party. Each December is the annual holiday party and gift exchange. SKG provides beverages and members bring potluck items for a grand holiday celebration!
You will find a list of upcoming meeting topics under Programs.
